Interview by Dennis Scanland
MusicEmissions: Let's let everyone in on how Greyarea started and the influences involved in the sound Greyarea was to take on.
Vinny: Dec. 1997, Ernie & I got together just to jam. We wanted to be melodic with a Quicksandish twist. It didn't feel right, so we just wrote what came natural, and they cameeffortlessly. It is easy to work with someone who has played for a while. We really like Face to Face, Saves the Day, etc. We wanted to be somewhere in between. I sent a 5 song demo tape to Tony@Victory, he liked it very much. We had enough material for a full length so that's what we did.
ME: What is your stand on mp3's and digital downloads?
V: I don't really mess with it. I hate waiting for that crap to download. I guess it's good & bad depending on how you look at it. It's free advertisement for the band, but then again, people might not buy it.
ME: Who did your website? It's nicely laid out. (http://www.greyarea.net)
V: Ernie is responsible for all of that. Our layout on both records, poster designs, shirts, everything. The guy is really amazing. He is definately the most talented people I have played with. He's also a great friend.
ME: Can you clarify the differences in the New York hardcore scene and the West coast Punk scene? Are there many differences in sounds? Is it more an "attitude" thing than sound?
V: The sound is very much different and think the attitude is too. NYHC scene differs from all other scenes. Although I have alot of respect for the west coast, I think the bands there are more out to help one another than here. It is more of a competion here. What happened to Chain Of Strength, Insted, Headfirst??(was Headfirst from Ca.?, who cares they were great)
ME: Besides MusicEmissions, what are your favorite websites and why?
V: Rotten.com cause it's fucked up, Jadetree.com cause they have some great bands, mulletsgalore.com cause it is amazing & funny.
ME: Do you enjoy touring? What do you like best about it? Who are your favorite bands to tour with?
V: I like to get away from the City and see different parts of U.S., sometimes I do get irratated with long drives and shitty food, but overall it is cool cause you become really close with the people you travel with. Or you hate each others guts, there's no in between. I like to be alone often, so I must isolate myself at times. KID DYNAMITE was the best band to tour with. Unfortunately they broke up, but we keep bugging them to get back together!!!
ME: In the vein of High Fidelity what are each of your top 5 all time albums?
V: This is such a broad question so don't think I'm an idiot. Let's say 5 albums I cannot live without....
1. The Cure"boy's don't cry"
2. 7seconds"the crew"
3. Face to Face"big choice"
4. Cro Mags"age of quarrel"
5. Bad Brains"I against I"
ME: What are your aspirations for Greyarea? Where do you see the band going?
V: More records, more friends, shows, etc. I love doing this.....there is nothing like doing this for 10 years and still having only 10 kids show up. I guess things could be worse......I could be in a wedding band like my father keeps telling me to. HC is who I am, so I will always be involved in one way or another. Time will tell......thanks for the interview, see you at the shows.
