T.O. Snob: Thanks for taking the time to do this with us.
You're playing CMW on March 12th will this be your first time in Toronto? Courtney- Actually we've never played in Canada before. We're very excited. I've been there once before and I can't wait to get back. Benjamin- We love Canada and the Canadian people.
T.O. Snob: When you do a festival like CMW or SXSW do you get a chance to check out any of the other bands?
C- We always try to find the time. SXSW last year we ended up playing something like 5 or 6 times and running from one side of Austin to the other so it was a bummer.
B- Definitely, we love checking out bands, meeting people, and inviting people to New York to play.
T.O. Snob: Your album, March Forth, was one of our favorites of 2008. We actually named it one of the top 20 of the year. Is there any chance we'll get to hear some new material at the show?
C- Wow, that's quite an honour.
B- Definitely, we've been working on a handful of songs and testing them out.
C- We have three new songs that we've been playing and there are three more which should be ready by the time of the show.
B- We're thinking about a new album and shooting for the fall.
T.O. Snob: What inspires a KaiserCartel song?
B- It's really all about personal experiences. Sometimes it's our own experiences, sometimes it's friends or interesting stories that other people tell us. Something with emotional weight to it.
Other times it's simple things like watching a movie. We have a song "Nobody Knows" that was inspired by a Japanese movie. "White Dove" from the "Okay" EP was inspired by a Czech movie from the ‘60s. So sometimes it's art that inspires.
T.O. Snob: Being in a relationship must create an interesting dynamic when it comes to the music. How do you settle disputes when it comes to music?
C- Touring would be hard if we had to spend so much time apart, so we really have an ideal situation going. So for us it's really the regular on tour cranky after a show or finding a spot to eat or rest.
In a musical sense, working together we think similarly. We always work together or manage to find a middle ground. After all, it was music that brought us together in the first place.
I think people who come to our shows who may not know get the feeling they are seeing something very private. Fans who do know must wonder when they hear us play a love song whether it was written for each other. It's like being a fly on the wall in our relationship.
T.O. Snob: If You could tour with anyone playing today who would those dream tour mates be?
C- Barrack Obama. Sorry I had a dream about him the other night.
B- Radiohead are big heroes for me. I would be stoked to play with them.
C- Me too. I'd also say The Beastie Boys. They seem like a lot of fun.
T.O. Snob: What are your guiltiest musical pleasures? When I asked Ben Lee this he said that there's nothing guilty about music.
B- I think Ben has something there, and not just because of his name. You like what you like. But it's not like your are going to brag about your Barry Manilow albums.
C- Hall & Oates. We were Hall & Oates for Halloween.
B- We both love Bryan Adams.
C- We do?
B- Sure, Bryan Adams. I'll rock that.
C- Journey
T.O. Snob: Have you ever written a song and said "damn I wish I wrote that"?
C- I love so many songs.
B- I've never thought that. The song is what it is and it's great the way it is.
C- I'd say we've more been inspired by songs we love.
T.O. Snob: Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans in Toronto?
B- We're psyched to meet you and we're psyched to come up to Canada and see our fans.
T.O. Snob: Thanks again for taking the time to do this for us. I'm looking forward to your show.
