DJ Cheb I Sabbah reaches back into the traditional Indian cultures for some very uplifting inspiration. What’s lacking on Krishna Lila is the heavy beat laden songs that have been present on his earlier releases. It’s not a problem, just beware that this album is seated a little more heavy in the traditional side of things. According to the tear sheet, this is an album of devotional material which draws on two classical traditions of India, North (Hindustani) and South (Carnatic). Sabbah relies on Indian musicians like K. Sridhar (Sarod), K. Shivakumar (violin), and Radhika Rajiv (vocals) among others. Bill Laswell is caught playing bass throughout the album as well. Krishna Lila is a beautiful album that brings Indian music to the masses in a kind and gentle way. It is a very rewarding and spiritual album and DJ Cheb I Sabbah succeeds once again.
