Now that the Hey Mercedes full-length debut is finally upon us we can take ease in knowing that Braid was not lost for nothing. When 3 out of 4 members come from a previous band you tend to think that the new band is going to sound pretty much like the old one. With Hey Mercedes they go leaps and bounds from what they were doing in Braid. Sure, some Braid fans may be disappointed in the lack of aggression that is on Everynight Fire Works but look further than that. The songwriting has matured into some very intelligent pop songs that will be appreciated by a much broader audience. The vocal harmonies and creative guitar riffs show a group of musicians who have grown into their style nicely. Hey Mercedes is a band that has high commercial potential without clambering onto the in sound. And I must applaud them for one of the most original cover art layouts that I have seen in a while. Hey Mercedes is a band that will stand up against the best of the indie-pop bands going right now. I look forward to the possibility of seeing them live.
