His Name Is Alive is a group that almost belongs in the Jazz category. Vocalist Lovetta Pippen is a soulful singer that puts her heart and soul into everything she sings. Last Night is a perfect follow up to Someday My Blues Will Cover The Earth with its moody changes and twists. There just seems to be that many more dynamics at work on Last Night. Take for instance the heavily funky ‘Storm’ with the heavy wah pedal on the guitar. Warn Defever fills more of the spaces that were on Blues to bring an even brighter production. His Name Is Alive is a band that has come from relative obscurity to an underground favorite and it’s all due to Lovetta’s amazing voice. This is why I come back for more. Listen to the way she can lull you to sleep like on “Train�. It’s a bit worrisome to think that this is the last album that they are doing for 4AD. I hope whoever is lucky enough to pick them up will respect their creative merit and allow them to keep progressing. His Name Is Alive is one of the more unique bands going right now and Last Night just may be the peak of their career.
