Going into the review of Darkane's Demonic Art I didn't know what to expect. Yet another metal band I was unfamiliar with. Might be a good thing because Demonic Art features a brand new vocalist, Jens Broman. He is a great, dynamic metal vocalist that really lends himself nicely to the fury of Darkane.
The first track featuring Jens' vocals is "Leaving Existence", a powerful way to get your appetite up for a killer album. I do hear a great similarity to Devon Townsend of Strapping Young Lad and other bands. We do need more vocalists like this in metal today. He's got the type of voice where his growl isn't of the "Cookie Monster" variety. Its more out of anger than trying to sound vicious, but then in the next breath he sings like nobodies business. Very dynamic. But how is the rest of the band? Well obviously very good because they can support a dynamic vocalist like Broman. There isn't an individual that really stands out in Darkane (other than Jens). Guitars are blazing, percussion is solid, bass is steady.
Yes, Demonic Art has blown me away. I love when you listen to an album like this, one with no expectations, and you get steamrolled. Fantastic!
