Experimental drone artist Dirk Serries has been making music both minimal and majestic for over twenty years, on his own and with vidnaobmana. "Carnival of Ourselves" features two roughly 20 minute tracks that full of emotional peaks and silent meditative holding patterns, both driven by the guitar and the slowly building and expanding loops created from its brittle simple chords.
The first untitled piece is a bit more restless than the second, with shifts in tempo and volume; this allows for a bit more investment on the part of the listener, who can be carried down several emotional paths. There isn't really a peak, though, so the paths aren't that demanding.
The second track is more continuously quiet and dark, but still resonant. Fear Falls Burning masters sublte meditative and uncomfortable moods without expressing the need to make any of them overt. That the guitar drives such a structure is impressive.
"Carnival of Ourselves" is a quiet gem that leaves a lot of its rewards to the imagination. Dirke Serries has created a tightly controlled but nor restrained exploration of the guitar and its various echoes.User Reviews and Comments
