Ode to Sunshine is one of those albums I have been meaning to listen to for ages! Best quick comparison I can make is the Walkmen only much brighter. I think the issue with Delta Spirit is their label. Rounder isn't really known for their pop acts. That's about to change if enough people get into Delta Spirit. They are a San Diego group that manages to integrate a hefty dose of pop into some folk and soul. The music is quite basic but VERY catchy. More often than not you'll find yourself all wrapped up in their wonderful hooks. A great example of their soul tendencies is the beautiful "House Built For Two". You'll also hear a lot of the Walkmen in that one. It's hard to believe that two of the members used to be in a Emo/Punk band (Noise Ratchet). But for me, it's the pop songs that keep my focus on the band. They write hooks that are as big as Spoon's and deliver them in their own manner. They do dabble in a little roots sound on tracks like "Strange Vine" but it really isn't enough to deter from the pop/rock.
As I always say, better late than never. I'd rather find out about a band like Delta Spirit 5 years late than not at all. Thank goodness I'm only 1 year late. The best thing about this band is I don't think they care. They just want to make great music. If they gain a legion of fans along the way, that's just a bonus for them. Count me in the legion!
