Hakim is one of those artists that is a hero in his own country. He is one of Egypt's top sha'abi performers, which roughly translates to “indigenous Egyptian music. The reason Hakim is so popular is his fusion with modern drum tracks and such in the traditional feel of the Egyptian music. He has sold literally millions of cassettes in Egypt (and numerous more have been bootlegged). Hakim began international recognition with 1998’s Hakim Remix project in which he turned 8 of his previously unreleased tracks over to Transglobal Underground for a reworking. Miles Copeland, Founder and Chairman of ARK 21 records, caught wind of Hakim on a late night radio show on BBC and proceeded to track him down. The rest, they say, is history. What we have on Yaho is exactly what you would expect. Hakim hasn’t changed a thing to appeal to the larger audience. The album has already produced two hit singles in the Middle East (‘Yaho’ and ‘Esma Yalli’) and it is bound to bring Hakim to a new audience in North America. His music is such fun, feel-good music that you just can’t sit still to.
