John Mayer is simultaneously over-hyped and underrated. While he is the occasional fodder for tabloids and will often pen an overly sappy pop song, his ability to play isn't half bad for a guy his age. Try! is simply enjoyable, taking the more musically sound elements of his solo records and making them bluesier and deeper, but keeping the lighter elements that have allowed him to gain mainstream appeal. It may not be particularly gritty blues, but I'd rather the public listen to this than those damn Jonas Brothers. It may not measure up to Hendrix or Charles, but it serves as a nice gateway drug. Another Kind of Green is my favorite, a heartbreaking delight.
