If you are looking for original music, walk away from this review and don't look back. But if you appreciate when a band takes a long lost formula and hones it down to a wonderful tribute to something from the past then The Aggrolites should definitely be on your radar. The Aggrolites looks to reggae and ska for their main template and even with the production on their albums, the strive to perfect this sound, if not, bringing it to more and more people.
The Aggrolites music is well thought out, it is soulful and filled with passion. These boys love what they are doing and just want to bring the sound of ska to the party and their new Hellcat album, IV is no different. A song like "By Her Side" is very intellectual, even while being personal, and keeps flowing nicely. Some of the songs feel like old bible camp campfire songs ("Brother Jacob"), in the kindest possible way. It's the more upbeat songs that keep me coming back for more. The one's like "Gotta Find Someone Better", in which the band even integrate some cool funk overtones into their ska. Throw this on your outdoor stereo next time you have a hot BBQ party. It will keep people feeling refreshed.
The Aggrolites would be one of those bands that should be on a summer festival bill, late at night when you are tired but you still have to have a groove to dance to. These guys could probably keep you going all night long with their smooth sounds.
