Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart
This album was a bit of an eye-opener for all the DC hardcore scenesters. Nobody had ever left the o-so-prestigious Dischord label for that of a major label. J. Robbins and his crew made the courageous decision of turning their backs to all their longtime friends and taking the plunge. We could probably argue until we're blue in the face about whether or not it was the right move for this genre defying band but the fact remains that they did it in 1994. Now they are defunct after only 2 albums on Atlantic. For Your Own Special Sweetheart was a masterpiece and one can still listen to this timeless album as if it were brand new. When the track "Savory" comes around to kick your ass you have no choice but to be held captive by the rhythmic guitar riff that seeps into your ears. Who could even complain about the brilliance of "Cooling Card", probably the most accessible song on the album? I would have to say that if this album was the only result of Jawbox "selling out" then it was totally worth it. A very influential album even to this day.
