Indie-electronic-pop with shades of Radiohead? I can hear scoffing. But hey, some of us aren't pretentious enough to reject good music just because other people like it, too. And this is a good album - it delights in contrasts.
The infectious melodies and dreamlike quality of the sound are enough to lull you into a trance as the threat creeps up on you, tightening tentacles around your ankles. This album will try to kill you in your sleep, because it wants to rescue you from the vagries of this awful world.
'Lullaby' neatly invokes this very notion. It's astoundingly beautiful but the lyrics are dark, and the flat, apathetic quality of the vocals is as unnerving as it is interesting. The most interesting bit comes when there is a lull - "your secrets are spilling from your mouth, and there's no going back from this -blank- now" with a burst of static over the word in the blank. Quickens your heartbeat, that one.
Mostly made of texture, sleepy beauty and inherent unseen danger. Easy, then. I just picture Sweeney Todd tucking a small child in at night - that trademark grin that sends shivers down your spine, and with his eyes never leaving your face, he says 'Sleep well.'
