A bright and shiny pop album from this Aussie quintet. The 32 minutes this lasts just fly by - not least because the music is memorable and enjoyable but because no time is wasted on ballads or pointless solos. If these really were cats, they'd be the kind that only a very dedicated owner could love because they'd just be nuts. Chasing your trouser legs kind of nuts.
Even though power pop sound can be a little twee at times, the vast majority of this material is well-executed enough that I simply don't care. There are brief more dreamy forays such as 'St Tropez', broken up with jangly, sparkly songs like 'Christopher Wren' and a jazzy, honey-toned 'Maybe Pile'.
As for lower points, 'Paperweight' falls a bit flat and the whole record is quite closely constructed, especially for being so light and poppy. I almost want the Summer Cats to lighten up a litle themselves. This type of music requires them to be what it is - quick, dirty and simple.
