Thrice - Beggars
Few albums of 2009 have been as hotly anticipated or as rumoured about as this one. Thrice themselves, blogging on studio pages, told the fans that this album would be more energetic than the sleepier Alchemy Indexes III and IV, and we could all be forgiven for imagining a return to Thrice in their purest form. However, we are all aware that they are by no means a static band. On the contrary, they refuse to sit still - and 'Beggars' takes us even further out of the box.
'Beggars' seems to be a compilation of everything that makes Thrice Thrice, but for once they have undercut everyone's expectations by making an album purely geared at themselves. There are notes of Air here in some more mature lyrics and vocals, and some of the signature guitar work from Artist In The Ambulance. No screaming though, make of that what you will.
This is clearly a more defined band making more defined music than, say, Vheissu. Thrice seem very aware that they still have time to showcase themselves, and they can certainly still take it heavy, melodic and beautiful. There are some moments where any fan would recoil a little, and I did, but Thrice spend most of this 'different' album proving that they are still pretty much the best f*cking band in the world. 'Beggars' isn't trying to leapfrog everything that came before, but neither is it settling for less than the band's own standards.

If you've been a fan of Thrice over the years as I have, you've seen first hand how the sound has matured and progressed over time. In my opinion, Beggars is a masterpeice and probably their best work yet, and that is tough to say because of the nostalgic value of their past work. But this new stuff-- it really is something you'll just have to hear for yourself. They've found a perfect mix of darker melodies while still retaning the heavy rock sound that made them so enjoyable in the first place. You'll recognize the sound of old Thrice in this album, it's simply evolved.
