The Good Graces is the band name chosen for Eskimo Kiss Records founder Kim Ware's debut solo album. Sunset Over Saxapahaw is the name of the record from the Atlanta, GA-based Ware.
Listening to the rough-edged vocals, talking about relationships and hardship, one can't help but draw comparisons between The Good Graces and the introspective and raw solo work of Throwing Muses' Kristin Hersh. Ware's voice even resembles Hersh's.
The accompanying music is stripped-down and loose. The bare bones approach provides enough support to the strong lyrics without distracting from them. The focus is always on Ware's honest and articulate thoughts.
Even though the album could be described as unpolished, for my fellow Canadians I'd say think of Jale, that feature is actually part of its greatest allure. When listening to the record you can actually tell there is a human being behind it.
That's a rare thing to hear on commercial radio today.
