They don’t make records like they used too, or at least that what Frank Lenz says in the tear sheet that came with his new album, Hot Stuff. “I was listening to ‘Hey Nineteen’ by Steely Dan and though that no one makes music so harmonically involved anymore. He then reached for some jazz-fusion like Billy Cobham and decided to make a funky album. That’s where The Hot Stuff comes into play. Frank takes rock, pop, soul, R&B, and jazz and mixes them all into the mix to end up with an amazing array of talent. You’re probably asking how a drummer comes up with all these songwriting ideas. I would imagine that all the while he was playing in Lassie Foundation he was actually off in this soul mind frame. The music on The Hot Stuff is cool and smooth with a few electronic effects but mostly just intelligent and damn funky music. In the end, Frank Lenz provides us with a glimpse into a few of his old 70’s record collection while utilizing today’s technology to get the message through. Smooth jams are what it’s all about.
