Apparently John and Dan Kahuna were much sought after big beat DJs in the 90s and it is only now that they have decided to provide us with a full-length. Going by the name FC Kahuna, the boys have toned down a bit and gone with a more down-tempo album with a few guest artists. Former Gus Gus vocalist, Haftis Helde lends her beautiful and under-utilized voice to the opening track, "Hayling", one of the album's many highlights. Super Furry Animals remix that track later on on the disc. SFA's lead vocalist Gruff Rhys also contributes vocals on "Fear of Guitars". There are times like on "Glitterball" where the guys sound a little dated but for the most part, Machine Says Yes is a fully engaging listen and quite original. They rely a lot on their big beat background but have no problem integrating a smoother down-tempo sound. There are quite a few other contributors too, which give Machine Says Yes a diverse feel to it. "North Pole Transmissions" is another highlight but I'm not sure who provides the female vocals. Many of these tracks have been used by Djs in their mixes but this is the first time they have been gathered onto one platter.
