Once I got over the band name and title (there is something to be said for brevity) I was able to fully enjoy Generoso Jimenez’s stylish Cuban beats. I’m not up on my Spanish but I have been told that the title translates to “Generoso, how well you play and indeed he does. Generoso Jimenez is a legend in Cuban music. You may recall the name Beny More who was Cuba’s greatest sonero and Generoso was his band leader. In the middle of a set he would sing out the title of this album. This album marks a special time in Jimenez’s life because the Cuban trombonist hasn’t recorded since 1965. Well, Que Bueno will not disappoint. It is full of some of the best Cuban beats that get your rump moving in all directions. The orchestration is brilliant and the artists included are world class: Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, JP Torres, Rubalcaba, Cachaito, and a very fine vocal ensemble. Some people may frown on Pimienta (Universal’s new Cuban music label) thinking that they are just hopping on the band wagon but there is so much great Cuban music out there that deserves to be heard.
