Nick Lowe - The Convincer
On Nick Lowe’s latest album, he is reminding me of a cross between Elvis Costello (with Burt Bacharach) and Johnny Cash. Not a bad place to be. This puts Nick right smack in the middle of lounge territory with a bit of twang to him. The Convincer is the album that completes his trilogy (1998’s Dig My Mood and 1994’s The Impossible Bird are the other two “trilogy albums) and could arguably be the best in the series, if not the best output from Nick in the past 15 years. Somewhere along the road of life, Nick Lowe picked up some convincing soul sounds and is exploiting them on The Convincer. The arrangements are very lush and full and Nick’s vocals are sounding strong and appealing. One of the essential “soul sounds on here is Nick’s cover of Johnny River’s “Poor Side of Town. Nick Lowe is successfully growing old with grace proving that some people aren’t content with burning out.
