Let this be known: Flanger is a jazz band. Yes, they play around with a bit of electronic programming but they are a fine jazz band in all senses. And not just an average jazz band either. Flanger pull out all the stops in order to create their own personal brand of electro-jazz. Atom Heart and Burnt Friedman have had the Flanger moniker for a couple years now. They have been producing “turbo-driven Titanium Jazz (straight from the tear sheet) for Ninja Tune, first under their N-Tone label and now Ninja Tune proper. They have started on an almost free-form jazz style that really works. I have heard some people were disappointed in the direction that they were starting to move but I don’t have a problem with it. It’s fun and people in the electronica world are reaching back to the older style of jazz. There is nothing wrong with incorporating that into the sounds of today. There are some crazy electro-beeps and other techno inspired sounds right along side groovy sax and other jazzy instruments.
