Make Up - Save Yourself
On Save Yourself, Make Up manage to get a gospel classic rock sort of feel to it. It portrays a psychedelic ambience not far off from where the Doors were headed. Lead singer, Ian Svenonious, is realizing his potential in his vocal delivery. He has soul, man. He sounds like a tamed down Jon Spencer. As for production this album comes of crisp like a soul album should. Baby, baby, baby. This album would feel at home in Austin Powers album collection. Their abilty to fuse the Motown sound with punk, garage, and gospel is outstanding. If you are looking for something that fuses genres then check out Save Yourself. It is a sound salvation. Their take on the Hendrix classic "Hey Joe" is a must hear.
