Many folk / old-time country fans will be aware of Red Allen and the influence that Red had on country and bluegrass music in particular. This Folkways collection marks the most complete Red Allen collection to date. Critics consider Red to be one of the most important people when it comes to the “High Lonesome Sound that people have come to relate to Bluegrass music. This compilation includes many tracks featuring the stellar mandolin playing of Frank Wakefield. You will also hear a young Marty Stuart getting his roots while playing mandolin as well. The harmonies that Red performs on his songs are so well done that you look back in awe that someone with this much talent remained so reclusive. My favorite track on this fantastic compilation has to be the Louvin Brothers’ “The Christian Life which was made popular by the Byrds on Sweetheart of the Rodeo. If the music from O Brother, Where Art Thou got you interested in country folk music then this Red Allen collection will be sure to please.
