National Dust may be all but dust now but Lorrie Matheson still has the songwriting bug. What better way to get a fix than with a solo album. You Should Know By Now reaches into Lorrie’s grab bag of songs and he pulls out 11 tracks that really show where his skill lies. He is reaching a little more into the power-pop area with many tracks like “I’m not always blue and the amazingly catchy “(I Got My) Blinders On. But Matheson is not afraid to throw in a quieter track here and there (the introspective “Under A Northern Moon). While some of the twang of National Dust has disappeared, the heartache still remains. Lorrie’s vocals are a cross between Elvis Costello and Cracker’s David Lowrey, which makes him totally accessible to many. His charms may not come immediately but a couple listens to the catchy chorus’ like “The Escapegoat and the title track, you’ll be hooked. One thing’s for sure, Matheson has the production down pat. You Should Know By Now is a clean sounding album. By the way Xerxes, another great job on the packaging.
