Holy Fuck - Latin
The Toronto instrumental band that offends people with too much time on their hands, Holy Fuck, are returning with a new album. Latin, out May 11th, is the band's third full length record.
I'll admit right away that it's difficult for any instrumental act to maintain a listener's attention for the course of an entire album. Sure, you can catch lightning in a bottle for a track, as Holy Fuck did with "Lovely Allen", but sustaining it becomes a real challenge.
It's a challenge though, that Holy Fuck are up to for the most part. The album opener "1MD", with it's glacially slow build, flows masterfully into "Red Lights", a track with an irresistibly funky bassline. "Stay Lit" weaves a whimsical story as it ebbs and flows. The energy level is amped up with "Silva & Grimes" (sounds like a Toronto Council meeting), a track perfect for fueling your treadmill experience.
There are breaks in the intensity. "Latin American" is somewhat plodding in nature, while "SHT MTN", despite some fresh classic rock percussion, simply fails to ignite.
The album standout may very well be "Lucky". The track features almost nonexistent vocals which lingering and buzz in the darker recesses of the music.
Though not a classic, Latin proves once again that Holy Fuck are alone in the upper echelon of instrumental indie rock.
