Jimmy MacBeath is more than a singer, he is a story teller as well and a good one at that. On Tramps & Hawkers, Alan Lomax has done a fine job documenting this travelling musicians during the 1950’s and 60’s. This collection of songs, stories and reminiscences shows just what a life this Scot has had. He was a soldier, farm laborer, and a traveller among the British Isles. The stories that he tells may sound like far fetched tales but you can’t help but warm up to the man with his low husky voice. The songs are done completely without accompaniment and his voice is always on key. Jimmy MacBeath has the type of story telling voice that you dream of running into in the Scottish Highlands whilst hitch-hiking. The liner notes are complete like the rest of the portrait series including lyrics to all the songs and the interviews transcribed. I really enjoyed Jimmy MacBeath’s thick Scottish accent.
