Mellonova - Slightly Happy
While the shoegazer scene basically died out many years ago, there are still a few bands that think it a viable pop alternative. Toronto’s Mellonova is one such band. Slightly Happy is their first full-length album after a couple of EP’s and quite an impressive start. The band spent some time soaking up the scene in England and came back to Toronto to record their debut album. The type of music that Mellonova play could easily be thought of as shoegazer rock if you think of that type as lush and dynamic arrangements that ebb and flow gently with gradual changes in tempo and style. The album is great background music because it isn’t too intrusive. After I had listened to the album for about 5 times there really wasn’t a memorable track but it provided a very nice background to my working day. Mellonova will appeal to fans of Coldplay and some other past British bands like Ride and Swervedriver.
