This has been a bit of a disappointing year for music for me. While I haven't been seeking out new music quite as much as I have in the past I partially blame myself but something worth discovering usually falls into my lap from time to time. That's more or less what happen with the collective Gayngs. I had all my new music in a playlist called "To Check Out". One day at work I randomly chose something I hadn't heard and ran into Ryan Olson's project called Gayngs and their debut album entitled Relayted. What you get with Gayngs is a bit of an electro-folk-funk affair but under the haze of distant dub. I've heard comparisons with Air but I think that there is much less sampling etc than their French counterparts. Instead, think of some 80s light rock affair being filtered through smoke and haze as someone who lived through the rave drugs of the decade is recalling. That is mostly due in part to having some Solid Gold members in the Gayngs collective. Oh, and the fact that Ryan chose to cover Godley and Creme's "Cry".
An unsuspecting highlight is the wonderful vocals of Bon Iver. He sort of makes this for me. He could be singing country music and I would probably drool all over it. His falsetto makes music that much more lovely. Relayted should have been cheesy. It alternatively ends up with some charm that can't be understated.
If nothing else, check out the two free MP3s over there, "The Gaudy Side of Town" and "Faded High". They are two of the major highlights aside from the "Cry" cover.
