Sawt El Atlas (arabic for Voice of the Atlas) is a 10 person French-Arabic group with a core of two sets of three brothers from Morocco. The boys grew up on a diet of contemporary western culture music as well as Arabic music. The end result is their very recognizable Rai style mixed with some very western style beats and influences. Donia was originally released in 1999 and has only now received a much deserved North American release. This album displays a diverse and very ethnical musical style that not often enough gets released on these shores. Although Sawt El Atlas may not appeal to everyone, they do have a charm that breaks down some musical barriers people seem to have about world music. There is charm in their Morrocan Arabic style and this should make them favorites here.
