Ever since I received a Nintendo in1987, I was immediately a fan of the music from the games. In Christmas of 1992, I got a Super Nintendo(SNES), and was blown away by upgraded music to 16bit. The music was much more moving, more complex and just more memorable. I've always been a metal fan as long as I can remember. When I heard that there was this band called Powerglove and that they did metal covers of video game music, I was really intrigued!
I picked up their album, "Metal Kombat for the Mortal Man". It was an onslaught of crazy metal riffs and blazing solos to the boss theme(Robotnik's theme) in Sonic 2. They also incorporated some other Sonic themes as well. For being a pretty independent band, they had some amazing production value. They go onto do one of the most original songs on the album, "Mario Minor", yes you heard this right, minor! The original Mario brothers theme was in a Major key,for you music purists it's in C Major, and they had someone figure out the song in C Minor. It's great because it flows perfectly into the Super Mario World Ghost Castle theme! Witness some amazing solos on the song as well. Back when Video game companies,"Rare" and "Midway" were kings, they released a game in 1994 called "Killer Instinct". The song is brutal! Full of very heavy, chunky riffs with some more insane soloing, did I mention these guys can play?Next track is called, "Vanquish the Horrible Night". It's a perfect blend of themes from Castlevania 2 and 3. It has a very Yngwie sound to it! Most of the album is amazing, but instead of writing a novel here, I'll just highlight two more tracks from the album. "Power Wisdom, and Courage" is a fanboys' dream come true. Powerglove perfectly mixes themes from the original "Legend of Zelda", "A Link to the Past" and "Ocarina of Time". I get goosebumps hearing this next track "Red Wings Over Baron".Anyone familiar with Final Fantasy (my favorite video game franchise) will go bananas over this track. It features music from arguably the best 2d final fantasy game ever released, Final Fantasy IV (or Final Fantasy II when it was original released on SNES in the US).
"Metal Kombat for the Mortal Man" is a fantastic album, great for the video game fan and great for the Metal fan. So if you are a fan of both genres, you will not want to put down this cd. Do yourselves a favor and pick up this amazing album. Powerglove is also releasing a new album on Sept. 28thcalled. "Saturday Morning Apocalypse" which will be metal covers of Saturday morning cartoons. I can't wait to hear the X-men, we all know and love that one! Enjoy and rock on! \m/
