Mama Sissoko has been making music in Mali for over two decades. He released two solo albums in the 90’s that ended up being critically acclaimed. In order to maintain tradition in his music, Sissoko travels throughout Mali to get permission to play and record certain traditional songs. Soleil De Minuit is Mama’s first album in quite some time and he has proven that it was worth the wait. The arrangements on this album are very well crafted Afro-pop that brings Sissoko into the forefront of African music. His main focus is a Afro Latino style which seems to go together very well. Don’t expect to dance throughout the album, as Mama is content telling mellower stories as well as upbeat danceable tracks. “Namissa is one of those mellower tracks that is about Mama’s sister of the same name. Soleil is an album that you can kick back and read a good book about African culture.
