Chinese Stars - Heaven On Speed Dial
Chinese Stars offer nothing new here, but that is not a bad thing. "Heaven on Speed Dial" features the kind of greasy smarmy noise we expect, along with some heavy rockers and a couple gross-outs of the sort done better by Black Lips. Still, it is hard not to like songs like the shrieking "Rabbit Face" and the juicy minimal riffs on "House is Burning" and "No Car No Blow Job."
On songs like "Body" and "Slow Children," however, where the melodies sound literally like someone turned on a Casio, hit some button and hoped for the best, vocalist Eric Paul needed to save the day, and his whining castrato (think the fade-out to every Zeppelin song, and Plant's screeching mercifully being cut off) does not work when out front. Snotty + killer riffs= brilliance. Snotty + lame music=annoying. "Like it Clean" and "Bicycle" are the other notable tracks, the former being a decent attempt at raunch and the latter being a quick, almost formless no-wave piece.
"Heaven on Speed Dial" will, like all Chinese Stars records, be liked, loathed or ignored. There are legit reasons for any of those choices, but this reviewer drops his Plinko chip on "Like."
