I had thought that Phil Elvrum’s Microphones project had a fluke with their 1999 album Don’t Wake Me Up but as I sit here listening to The Glow Pt. 2 I realize that Phil knows exactly what he is doing. Upon first listen you may think that the Microphones is just a kid doing sloppy bedroom recordings but upon closer examination you start to see the charm in their lo-fi sound. Even the songs sound sloppy but when you get into the nuts and bolts of it they are brilliant little pop ditties. The sounds are psychedelic at the best of times and take the listener on an amazing 67 minute journey through Phil’s amazing songs. The lyrics are cryptic at the best of times but always thought provoking. The Glow Pt. 2 would sit nicely alongside an Olivia Tremor Control album. This fan would recommend that the Microphones be listened to with a good set of headphones in order to catch all that is going on. I will be watching the Microphones career blossom once more fans get on board.
