Oceana takes a 180 with this four song EP. Gone are the elements of hardcore the band had been known for. The double bass, the rough guitars, and most notably the screamed vocals have disappeared. They are currently on the Rise label, which aside from progressive standouts Tides of Man, is mostly comprised of dry and crunchy post-hardcore bands. Oceana seems willing to embark on a completely new journey and this album is the perfect beginning.
Oceanas new sound has definite elements of California indie rockers Thrice. They definitely bring a bass filled sound throughout, but these songs also possess unique dancy instrumental and vocal work. The guitars are diverse and full of rhythm. The vocals are on the verge of being downright catchy and Christian elements can be found in vocalist Brennan Taulbees lyrics. This Florida based band is onto something.
Without a doubt this band is defiantly developing a sound that will grab attention in the future. They may lose much of their old fanbase, but they are making more creative and impressive music. They have much to explore in Indie music. But they are well onto finding their way.
