When a group that shaped a genre returns after 26 years, people stand up and take note. The group in question is Brazil’s Trio Mocoto and the genre is Samba Rock (or Soul). A listen to their new Samba Rock album from Six Degrees will have you wondering just why these three finely talented musicians left the scene that they created. The important thing is that they realized that Samba Rock and many other styles of Brazilian music has made a comeback in the past few years and now is as good a time as any to make their move. Samba Rock sounds fresh and new with Trio Mocoto making a fine return to form. The sound that is prominent throughout is the Brazilian instrument called the Cuica. It’s a small hand-held drum with a wire running through the middle of the drumhead. It produces a strange sound but it adds to the Samba sound that Trio Mocoto seem to have mastered. Tracks are all upbeat and danceable while they are still able to add many new sounds like samples and rapping to their sound. Let’s hope it’s not another 26 years before their next album.
