Weedeater don’t so much as explore new avenues as new ways to make that muddy rut in the road deeper and more greasy. “Jason..The Dragon” is the NC band’s first release since ’07, and finds them still obsessed with the two chord crawling King Snake riff, and it still works!

You might think by the title that this is a concept record of sorts. That feeling is not eased by a peek at some of the songs, those with names like “Mancoon,” “March of the Bipolar Bear,” and my favorite, “Turkey Warlock.” A fantasy about odd and maybe homicidal farm animals? No fear; whatever the band meant by those songs (or in whatever state they were in when writing them) they rock as hard as the other winners in the set, notably “Hammerhandle, “Homecoming,” and the impossibly heavy “Whiskey Creek, “which ends the record for you with a satisfying face-vacuuming. “Jason..The Dragon” salts in a few backwoods country overtones to their chewy metal, but that only adds to the fun/menace.

Boozy, slightly demented and a big boot to the throat, Weedeater take their time with you, but the torture is sweet for both band and fan. They are on tour this spring, and for a few shows will be paired with Black Cobra. Scoop: The metal show of the year.
