I hated this when it came out. Along with the rest of the new romantics ABC seemed, at the time, to peddle the lie that, despite the grim reality of the disaster and misery Thatcher was wreaking on Britain, everything was actually OK. No really, it was, honest! Over time my opinion of the new romantics has somewhat mellowed. Well, in places. These days I see ABC more as a pop band which rode a wave rather than as part of the deception.
Martin Fry once said in an interview with the NME that his ambition in life was to write the perfect pop song. Well, he certainly had a few goes at it and this is probably the closest he came. It was also a minor hit in the USA which was something unusual at the time for a British act. Now I hear it for the memories. Twenty five years ago I would have walked out of the room.
