I have had very little interaction with the grunge artists of the last decade. The period coincided with my musical hiatus and so it hardly surprising that, at the time, the whole thing passed me by. When I finally encountered some of its leading lights, Dulli and Lanegan as the Gutter Twins on "Saturnalia" I was less than impressed. It seemed to me to be little more than a rehashing of the rock which had ruled the world in the seventies.
Yet this track is not bad, though it does not make me want to go out and explore more of the Afghan Whigs? other work. I am not sure what the message behind it is, if indeed there is one, but it is a good little rock number which is tight and purposeful, without any of the self-indulgence which one might expect. Oh, if only more American rock were more like this. Actually, no.
