Joan Armatrading has always put a lot of people off by her unfortunate (and it has to be said largely involuntary) association with the militant lesbian set. Notwithstanding the adverse affect this has undoubtedly had on her career, this is an excellent song, full of hope and love with a hint of concern that things might not turn out the way the protagonist wants. The subject is a relationship which started out as, to put it bluntly, fuck buddies, and is now turning into something deeper.
Armatrading's voice perfectly captures the tentative manner in which this subject is brought up. The real female empowerment which Joan Armatrading brings to this is that the protagonist is a woman who is asserting her own individuality and seeking her own future, independent of the man, who is almost invited to go along - if he wants to. The song is dominated by a wonderful tingling guitar intro eventually gives way to some excellent sax work which ultimately makes the track.
