Pete Docherty has a strange relationship with the UK press, or rather it should be said that the UK press has a strange relationship with Pete Docherty. His repeated busts for drug possession, and the inexplicable fact that he has escaped prison when lesser-known mortals would have already been on their second or third spell by now, is part of it. His relationship with supermodel, Croydon's finest, Kate Moss, is another. But the real fascination is the morbid one of watching a train wreck.
Docherty has been touted as a musical icon of his age. Babyshambles was formed by him when he was finally kicked out of the Libertines for his drug use. With a typical two fingers to everything attitude, Babyshambles soon released this single. And just as life mirrors art (or should that be the other way round?) the single is as much of a train wreck of music as Docherty's life is of existence. Naturally, having the word "fuck" in the title, brought out the middle-class teenage hordes in their droves, anxious to bolster their anti-establishment credentials. Yet this single is really nothing to write home about. It is sloppy and does little to distinguish Doherty's new band from his old one. I guess Pete is destined to be more famous as a druggie than as a musician, for he's showing precious little musical creativity in this.
