This is an absolutely superb cover: only a band like Bauhaus with their mixture of Goth and Glam to such perfection could manage do conceive, let alone execute something like this. Imagine Bowie's original track gone entirely electric and then ramped up, well this is what it would have sounded like. There is a barely restrained ferocity present in this track which sounds almost manic in comparison with Bowie's restrained original. The feeling of pathos Bowie conveyed is entirely gone here, replaced by Murphy's howling vocals. And yet, it retains enough of the glam, almost camp feel of the original to prevent it from becoming a bombastic pastiche but instead it comes across as theatrically over-the-top and not taking itself too seriously. Peter Murphy's voice is just right for the delivery here. At times I can almost think this better than the original. No wait, it IS definitely better than the original.
