This is a strange little number. It is the most un-Beach Boys song the Beach Boys ever did. A kind of half homage half description of the student militancy of the late sixties, it is full of references to events which date the track to a point in time, and decrease its relevance the further away one moves from that time. And then, just when you thought it was praising student activism, it invites you to run away instead. Is this the closest the Beach Boys came to Monty Python?
Yet despite this, I actually quite like it. It may be pretty silly but it is one of those songs which you can't help singing to yourself until, in the end, it goes from irritating to endearing. No I am not going to hail it as the best anti-war/pro-activism song in the history of mankind. It is far from that and I am not even sure the Beach Boys would have seen it that way themselves. As a piece of music it is not bad. As a lyrical statement it can seem pretty daft.
