Nirvana - In Utero
In Utero begins with an explosion of noise and ends in a ballad (well sort of). Everything in-between is the thought of a man who, by no fault of his own, suddenly found himself on top of the world. Nevermind changed how people in America and the world viewed Rock and and Kurt never really knew how to handle it. But they blazed on, and then it was time to write some new songs, songs that weren't Smells Like Teen Spirit or Come As You Are. It was time for something new, and when all their Seattle contemporaries are still churning out grunge metal light; Nirvana seem more interested in sticking to their guns and making their heroes proud, and they do. In Utero has more in common with Plastic Ono Band (John Lennon) and Sisters LP (Sonic Youth) than it does with the latest release from Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam. Here are songs from the heart; but these aren't soppy or sentimental, these songs are raw emotions full of life. Nirvana finally found the right production with Steve Albini and they create the noise they were meant to. Songs like Very Ape and Serve The Servant blend pop and noise into perfection; while others like All Apologies and Pennyroyal Tea show that there is another side to Kurt. Rape Me is Lennonesque in it's lyrical honesty. Nirvana are not trying to live on the glory off the glory of Nevermind, they are here to prove themselves again- and they do. In Utero is defiantly more challenging than Nevermind, but at the same time it is far more rewarding.
