Continuing with the theme of space exploration which Bowie had begun so successfully with "Space Oddity", just as the world was turning its inter-planetary gaze from the Moon to Mars, Bowie did the same. The title of the track has only a passing relevance to the content of the song but that should not detract from what is one of Bowie's greatest singles. Coming as it did when Bowie was beginning to look for a new direction in his music, the single is kind of ironic - is there a career after Ziggy Stardust?
Rick Wakeman plays the keyboards on this, underlining Bowie's ability to be able to call upon the help of the best musicians when he needed to. And recently, a whole TV series in the UK about a cop transported back in time to 1973 has been titled after the hit of that year - "Life on Mars".
