Just how tasteless could Morrissey get? He had earlier written songs about the victims of the Moors Murderers and now he hits new 'lows' with "Girlfriend in a Coma". In fact, the song is often misrepresented for it is a sad and lonely sort of song. As it turned out, this was one of the least commercial singles the Smiths put out and it is almost as if the band had given up on its ability to straddle the independent and mainstream - a presage of the shortly to be demise of the band perhaps? Whatever, as usual, Morrissey is able to use words to say things that most other songwriters are never going to get anywhere near.
