There were some subjects which, in the early seventies at least, were considered a complete no no if you wanted any sort of airplay on the charts. Anything overtly to do with sex was one; using any form of foul language was another. Singing about suicide was a third, as Blue Oyster Cult had found out when "(Don't Fear) the Reaper" had been banned as the radio stations mistakenly thought it promoted suicide.

Punk changed a lot about what was acceptable on the radio. Suicide no longer became the automatic no no that it had been, and the Police were one of the first to reap the benefit. Songs about suicide are normally depressing dirges so it is a pleasant (is that the right word?) change to hear an upbeat catchy number about someone topping himself over a girl.
