I am never really sure what to make of a band like Foghat. They always seemed like one of those anomalies you hear about in sci-fi movies - something which is there but shouldn't be; something which is life, Jim, but not as we know it. I mean, they were a hard rock outfit which didn't sound like it at the same time as being a pub rock band which would outdo any other pub rock band you could think of. And by 1975, when "Slow Ride" was released, rock was moving on and was about to hit the biggest smack in the face it had experienced. And there were Foghat, still giving it all they had with almost quaintly anachronistic tunes like this.
I can remember when this came out in 1975 - no one I knew liked it. Neither did I. Foghat were simply the ultimate in being uncool. Still, "Slow Ride" got a new lease of life as being one of the easier to manage tracks on Guitar Hero. Perhaps that explains everything - this song was simply written to be mimicked by wannabe air-guitarists on a PS3. That perhaps explains why bit doesn't quite sound as uncool as it did thirty odd years ago.
