Department S were a band which straddled the post punk and pop worlds but without ever becoming embroiled among the new romantics. As a result, they offered an alternative sound to the mainstream which differed from the norm. A pity then, but no surprise, that the mainstream pretty much ignored them. After all, telling people what they wanted to listen to was the domain of those who bought the radio stations playlists, not the responsibility of any one band.
"Is Vic There?" featured a great guitar hook, as well as a clever (too clever) line in the refrain. It was catchy and memorable but that would not be enough to obtain commercial success. Having said that, it was badly let down by the awful cover of T. Rex's "Solid Gold Easy Action" as a B-side though.
