Common - Electric Circus
Common had me sold on his Like Water for Chocolate release. It was a super solid hip-hop release that made others that year look like inferior products. And now, he brings us Electric Circus. Common is anything but common. His ear for a good rhyme and beat is better than most out there. The track “I Got A Right Ta is one of my faves, at times almost reminding me of John Spencer and his gang if they could rap. And, Mr. Common is able to get some of the hottest black divas on his album. Erykah Badu makes a couple of appearances, the best of which is a track called “Jimmy Was A Rock Star. Mary J. Blige makes her appearance on the Neptunes produced track “Come Close where she and Common have an in depth conversation. Jill Scott is also present contributing her fabulous vocals to the track “I Am Music. Another contributor of note is Cee-Lo from the Goodie Mob. His distinctive voice is the one you hear on “Between Me, You & Liberation. A bit of a surprise is the contribution from Sonny of P.O.D. fame on the track “Electric Wire Hustler Flower but it really works well. I don’t know why an artist as diverse as Common feels that he has to rely on guests artists to make the album even more diverse but he does it well. The album still holds a very strict form to what Common is all about. Common is a visionary and is able to picture other people rapping his tracks.
