If you can believe it, this is the first time that I have ever heard Fridge. I have heard the band mentioned in reviews of Four Tet, Kieran Hebden's other project, but until now Fridge was unlistened to by these ears. It is very unfortunate because I really like what I hear on Happiness. They play music that borders on Electronica but has much of what may be considered a Tortoise-style post-rock groove to it. Groove exists on Happiness, which may sound strange coming from a band such as Fridge. It works though. Hebden and his crew start of a minimalistic track and build on it until you find your head bobbing along nicely to it. They do play a lot of instruments on Happiness but Fridge relies heavily on samplers to do the brunt of the work. Their music is entirely instrumental, which may be why they didn't make it on Polygram affiliate Go!Beat. This is a great album from Fridge and I can rest easier now that I found their Eph album. Call it post-rock or neuveau electronica, Fridge is ahead of many of their peers and Happiness is a superior album.
